This unit was called the Gray Beards because they were older than the normal soldiers. He died July 1868 of Apoplexy at his home, 90 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. He was 45 years old and a native of Ireland. He resided in Charleston for 25 years where he owned a Wheelwright business as well as several properties.

MARRIAGE

James and Julia A. (MILES) Heffernan October 13, 1891 St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River, Massachusetts

Julia parents were Thomas and Hannah (Annie) MILES nee FARRELL born in Bridgeport, NJ moved to Fall River after 1880, Hannah died 11-1-1882 in Fall River, buried at St. Patricks Cemetary, address at time of her death was 23 Green Street. Cannot find Thomas, Julia's husband's father was also James and he was a grocer at 21 Washington Street,Fall River, James the son was a backboy, Julia was a spinner. The priest who married them was Rev. Christopher Hughes, Pastor of St. Mary's.

James Heffernan Sr. who ran a grocery store at 21 Washington Street, in Fall River, (this is also where they lived) died on December 22, 1890, his wife Mary lived there until 1896 when she moved to 77 Washington Street in Fall River, then she died August 17, 1897. I have a long list of Heffernans who lived in Fall River, Ma at the turn of the century and could list them for you, the list is from the city directory and it lists their job and place of work and home address, are you interested? I could type them in or photo copy them for you and you could type them in yourself. I have the years of 1890 through 1911, let me know which way and send me your address.

Maryann great great neice of Julia A. Heffernan

P.S. I have not been able to locate her after her wedding but in the 1920 censes there is a Julia A. Heffernan who is divorced and has a daughter named Lillie, and they live in Bridgeport, Ct.

James Sr. wife Mary also had a son Thomas who died October 10, 1891 he was a loomfixer, at the Davol Mills, another son John a weaver who also lived at 21 Washington St., shows up in the 1893 directory and disappears until another John, weaver shows up in 1898 living at 365 Ferry Street, whic might be the same brother because his new address shows up after Mary the mother dies, and he is actually listed as boarding at Ferry Street. In 1900 a Julia A. Heffernan shows up at74 Washington Street and all these addresses are in close proximity to each other, in the 1900 censes she isn't listed at this address.
Ellen Heffernan b1829 who traveled from Tipperary Ireland to New York as the wife of John Ryan b1831 listed below is the only information I have it may be useful to someone. [ljryan2009 @ hotmail.com]
