Harmon R. Newman
1832 - 1915
Uncle Harmon Newman, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, a pioneer in this state and section, died Friday, June 25, after a long illness, and was buried Saturday afternoon at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Brother Coburn of Richardson, the Pleasant Valley pastor, and Brother Moreland of Garland conducted the service, and the body was buried with Masonic honors.
Mr. Newman was born May 27, 1832, in Alabama, but moved in early youth to Missouri. From there he came to Texas in 1856, settling at what is now Pleasant Valley. Only two or three families then lived in that section.
Here he married Miss Emeline McDaniel in 1857 and to this union eleven children were born, nine of whom lived to be grown, Mrs. M. C. Raney, one of the children, died only a few years ago. The others are Mrs. Gus Poovey; Dr. George Washington; Mrs. Ernest McCallum; Mrs. Dave Compton; James Daniel; Mrs. Lum Tucker; Sam, and Mrs. Obe McCallum. At the time of his death, Mr. Newman had 59 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, more than a hundred with his own children. His wife died in 1878.
Since he was 23 years old Uncle Harmon has been a consistent member of the Methodist church. He was a Royal Arch Mason. For four years he served in the Civil War, in several commands, all this side of the Mississippi.
The first school house and church in his neighborhood was built with Mr. Newman's aid, and he erected the first gin, which was run by horse power. He was always an active and public spirited man.
The honorary pallbearers were Dr. J. D. Moorman, H. C. Smith, T. J. Swim, Volney Coldwell Sr., B. F. Williams, J. T. Jones, and C. L. Taylor; active pallbearers, Jess Tucker; R. G. Wynn; J. V. Buchanan, and J. A. Armstrong. Many people came to the funeral from Garland, Rowlett, Wylie, Dallas, and distant points. Among them were Congressman Hatton W. Sumners and Judge Works.
