Preceeded in death by her parents, Luz and Lasaro Flores, she is survived by her cherished son Jason Martinez of San Antonio, Texas; loving sisters, Patricia Flores of Galveston, Louise Flores of Houston, Lucia Skyiepal and husband Mark of League City, Theresa Dear and husband Alan of Spring, and Felicia Flores of Galveston; dear friends at Ball High; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Alice graduated from Ball High School in 1967, where she was a Tornette for all four years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Lamar Tech in Beaumont in 1971. She began her career with the Galveston Independent School District in 1971, by working in the Business Office as a secretary. In 1973, she began her teaching career at Ball High School in the business department. After many years of teaching accounting, she ventured out and became the Student Council sponsor. She held this position for the last fifteen years. In addition, she coordinated all of the student activities at Ball High. Under her direction and guidance, the Ball High Student Council was a recognized leader among all high schools across the state. She continued with this quest until her death. To all who knew her, she was affectionately called "Miss TOR." She was known by many and cherished by all. One of the highlights of the school year for Alice was Ball High Homecoming. She spent countless hours planning and coordinating the week-long events to make it the biggest and best celebration for the students. Another special event for Alice was the annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive sponsored by her Student Council, which provided food for needy families in Galveston. Her favorite holiday was Valentine's Day. She celebrated "Love Day" at Ball High with flowers, balloons, and candy sold as a fundraiser for the Student Council. For Alice it was a celebration for the students. From the very beginning, Alice was a true supporter of all athletics at Ball High. She never missed a game, and she faithfully attended every athletic event held at the high school. She could be found selling TOR memorabilia at all Ball High sporting events. One of Alice's greatest contributions to BHS was the time and devotion that she put into graduation. Under her guidance, Ball High was one of the first schools in the state to initiate Project Graduation, a drug and alcohol-free alternative for celebrating graduation. Year after year many graduating seniors were unable to afford a cap and gown for the ceremony. Alice personally financed a cap and gown for those students to ensure that they had the opportunity to march with their class. As a tribute to her, friends and family have created a living memorial entitled "Helping TORS Forever." Memorials may be made to this fund at Ball High, attention: Leslie Fraley. Pallbearers will be her former Ball High School Student Council officers and honorary pallbearers will be her current Student Council officers.
Alice will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. BALL HIGH SCHOOL FOREVER - GO TORS !!!!!!!!!!!

Today we WELCOME HOME a Brother killed during the bloody Battle of Tarawa in 1943 whose remains have now been recovered and accounted for by DPAA. He will be returned to his family for burial at Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors, April 29, 2020. Rest Easy now Brother, you may stand down as we have taken the watch. Semper Fi!
Release No: 19-192 Jan. 8, 2020

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced today that Marine Corps Reserve 1st Lt. Justin G. Mills, 25, of Galveston, Texas, killed during World War II, has been accounted for.
In November 1943, Mills was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands, in an attempt to secure the island. Over several days of intense fighting at Tarawa, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded, while the Japanese were virtually annihilated. Mills was killed on the first day of the battle, Nov. 20, 1943. His remains were reportedly buried in the Central Division Cemetery, and later to the Lone Palm Cemetery on Betio Island.
In 1946, the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company centralized all of the American remains found on Tarawa to Lone Palm Cemetery for later repatriation. However, almost half of the known casualties were never found. No recovered remains could be associated with Mills, and, in October 1949, a Board of Review declared him “non-recoverable.”
In 2014, History Flight, Inc., a nonprofit organization, identified a site correlated with the Central Division Cemetery. Excavations of the site uncovered multiple sets of remains, which were turned over to DPAA in 2015, where they were subsequently accessioned to the DPAA laboratory.
To identify Mills’ remains, scientists from DPAA used anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial and material evidence. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis.
Mills will be buried April 29, 2020, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
