The Galveston Daily News Galveston, Texas - December 1, 1925Lifelong Galvestonian is Stricken Suddenly
SCHREIBER, PETER, years old, a lifelong resident of Galveston, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his residence 727 Ave. H. Mr. Schreiber, who was born and reared in this city is survived by his wife, one sister, Mrs. Locke; two daughters, Mrs. F. Seale and Mrs. J. Forgie; six sons, Joe, John, Harry, Alva, Willie and Peter Jr. and eleven grandchildren.
Mr. Schreiber was well known to Galveston, having at one time served in the City Council as Alderman from the Twelfth Ward. He was also a member of the Screwman's, Red Men's and Woodmen's organizations.
Mr. Schreiber had undergone an operation about three weeks ago and was apparently doing well.
Funeral Services will be held this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the family residence. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Raimundo de Ovries, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating.

The Galveston Daily News Galveston, Texas November 23, 1935SCHREIBER, LORENA MARGUERITE - Funeral Services for Mrs. Lorena Marguerite Schreiber, 43, wife of Harry W. Schreiber, fireman, will be held this afternoon, the procession moving from the funeral home of Malloy and Son at 4 o'clock to Sacred Heart Church Rev. M. S. Chataignon will officiate and burial will be in Old Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Schreiber, a native Galvestonian, died at 6:55 p.m. yesterday morning at John Sealy Hospital after an illness of 11weeks. She was born Dec. 19, 1891.
Surviving her are her husband: a daughter, Dorothy Schreiber; a son, Joseph Schreiber; a sister, Miss Gertrude Fagan, of Galveston, and other relatives.

MARY ELIZABETH - Pioneer Resident Succumbs at Home - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Schreiber, 91, widow of Peter Schreiber and Pioneer Resident of Galveston died at her home, 723 Ball, Tuesday at 6:35 pm. Mrs. Schreiber came to Galveston from New Orleans in 1863 and was married November 3, 1875.
She had lived at her home on Ball since 1863. The House is said to be one of the first structures built in the East End. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church
She is survived by: Two daughters, Mrs. F. G. Seale and Mrs. Ethel Forgie, both of Galveston; Five sons, Joseph and Alva P. Schreiber, both of Houston; Harry William and Peter Schreiber, all of Galveston: Three Sisters, Mrs. L. D. Cook, Galveston; Mrs. J. Childress, Tucala, Texas, Mrs. I Cravey, Ranger; eleven grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Arrangements will be announced by J. Levy & Brothers Funeral Home.

The Galveston Daily News Galveston, Texas - July 25, 1960SCHREIBER, HENRY LOUIS 'BIM' - 73, a native Galvestonian, died at his residence 116 Barracuda at 11 pm Saturday. He was a retired Fireman and served the city 36 years prior to his retirement in 1957. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Eagles Lodge Aerie 48, and the Firemen's Local Union.
He is survived by a son, Joseph J. Schreiber of Galveston; Two sisters, Mrs. F. G. Seale and Mrs. Ethel Forgie, both of Galveston: Three brothers; Peter G. and William J., both of Galveston, and Al P. Schreiber of Houston; five grandchildren, a Great Grandchild, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held from Malloy & Son Chapel at 3 pm Tuesday with the Rev. Edmond H. Gibson officiating. Burial will be in the Eagles Plot at Galveston Memorial Park.
Graveside Services will be under the auspices of Eagle Aerie 48.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home with Rev. Bob E. Waters, pastor of St. John's Methodist Church of Texas City and Dr. Walter Willis, pastor of Moody Memorial First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.
Members of the Tucker Lodge No 297, AF & AM will conduct Masonic grave side services.
Mr. Schreiber was born July 15, 1896 and was a lifelong resident of Galveston. He was employed as a marine superintendent for G & H Towing Co. He held memberships in the Tucker Lodge, Scottish Rite, El Mina Shrine and the Maccabees.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Wilma Worthy and Mrs. Jo Ann Willis, both of Texas City; two brothers, Alva P. Schreiber of Corpus Christi and Peter Schreiber of Galveston; two sisters, Mrs. F. G. Seale and Mrs. Ethel C. Forgie, both of Galveston; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1:45 P.M. Tuesday at Malloy & Son Funeral Home Chapel, followed by 2 P.M. Mass at the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. T. W. Kappe, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Seale was born Nov. 26, 1876, in London and had been a Galveston resident for 90 years. He retired from the U. S. Corps of Engineers and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Seale of Galveston, two daughters; Mrs. H. Freudenberg, Jr. of Galveston and Mrs. Marie Ferris of Galveston; two sons, Fred G. Seale, Jr. of Houston and Peter W. Seale of Galveston; three grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A rosary was recited Monday at the Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at J. Levy & Bros Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Cargill officiating. Burial will be in Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a rosary 7, p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schreiber, a lifetime resident of Galveston was born here March 5, 1899. He retired in 1965. He had been past president of Brigands Club, Telephone Pioneers of America and Communications Workers of American Workers of American Local No. 6125.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Elfrieda Schreiber, brother, Alva Peter Schreiber of Seguin; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Carrie) Seale and Mrs. Ethel Forgie, both of Galveston.
Pallbearers will be J. J. Schreiber, Fred Seale, D. Worthy, R. Willis, R. Isabell and C. Benson. Honorary pallbearers will be B. C Hrncir, W. J. Bobb, A Martorell, A. Dusek, J. V. Martin, M. Myers and Dr. J. L. Jinkins, Sr.

The Galveston Daily News Galveston, Texas December 22, 1974SCHREIBER, ALVA PETER 'BUBA' - HOUSTON - Funeral services for Alva Peter Schreiber (Buba), 80, a native Galvestonian, will be held Monday in the Heights Funeral Home in Houston.
Mr. Schreiber died Friday in Guadalupe Hospital in Seguin. He was born July 5, 1894, in Galveston. He was a retired printer and had recently resided in Seguin.

Eugene Cargill officiating. Burial will be in Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock under the direction of the Earthman Funeral Home in Bellaire, Tex.
Mr. Schreiber died Tuesday in Houston. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 126 in Galveston, the World Trade Club, the Cotton Exchange, the Houston Maritime Association and Columbia Lakes.
A rosary will be said today at the Earthman Funeral Home in Bellaire and friends may call at the Malloy & Son Funeral Home Friday afternoon until service time Saturday.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ellaree Schreiber of Houston; three sons, Paul Joseph Schreiber of Lafayette, La., Ronald Schreiber and Donald Schreiber, both of Houston, a granddaughter, Mareia Schreiber of Lafayette; and a number of relatives in Galveston including two aunts, Mrs. Ethel Forgie and Mrs. Carrie Seale.
Pallbearers will be James Wingfield, W. Lee Crowley, Hardin Wittig, Herman Ewald Jr., Robert Eielund Jr. and John Dodds. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Keleman, Jack Bonner, Mo. O. Binson, Cliff Blakemore, Herb Baker, Bill Prin, Dick Bridgman, Timothy Young and Julian Platon.

Mrs. Seale died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston. Born Jan. 25, 1880 in Galveston, Mrs. Seale was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie Farris of Galveston; two sons, Wilbur Seale of Galveston and Fred G. Seale, Jr. of Houston; three grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanora Snyder of Texas city; daughters, Lois Wheeler of Triadelphia, W.VA., and Nina Thomas of Texas City; sister, Mrs. Mildred Lowe of Galveston; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sanchez's family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home on Thursday evening after 5 p.m. Mrs. Sanchez was born in San Leon, Texas, July 27, 1913, however, she has been a longtime resident of Galveston most all of her life. In her younger adult life, Mrs. Sanchez owned and operated "Sanchez Cleaning", a local island cleaners, for which some may remember her by. Some may remember Mrs. Sanchez for her involvement at election time as Deputy Clerk of Precinct 310, at City Hall and many, however, will remember her for the love she held for her family. She was a loving wife and mother and perhaps one of her favorite joys in her life were her grandchildren and their children. She was the first of five generations within her family and her "being" was the foundation of one solid family commitment. She was a loving individual who will be sadly missed. Mrs. Sanchez was a lover of outdoors. She enjoyed daily walks down 23rd street here in Galveston and would frequently visit different island restaurants and eateries along the way. She loved to garden and many can tell of the wonderful grapefruits they enjoyed from her beautiful backyard grapefruit tree. Watermelons and an orange tree made up some of the setting, as well. She loved to dance and whenever she could, wherever she was, she would enjoy a good dance with those in her family and also her friends. She leaves behind many wonderful memories to remember her by. Mrs. Sanchez is predeceased in death by her husband, Angel M. Sanchez; her parents, Patricio and Josephina Santana and also two of her sons, Florentino Gutierrez and also Santos Gutierrez, Jr. She leaves behind many fond memories with her children, Frances Polkinghorne and husband, Joseph of Santa Fe, Texas, Mary Ward of Galveston, Texas and Lupe Lopez of Texas City, Texas. Sharing in her loss, also, are Mrs. Sanchez's loving grandchildren, Lena Boutelle, Betty McDaniel, Laura Kay Polkinghorne, Jimmie Foy, Jr., Lucy Latiolais, Arch Teer, Jr., Minnie Bernard, Allen Teer, Brenda Sweeney, Santos Gutierrez, III and Ricky Gutierrez, her great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and friends. SAVANICH, JOHN JOSEPH -Galveston - John Joseph Savanich, 85, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Mr. Savanich's family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Savanich will be cremated. Mr. Savanich was born in Savannah, Georgia September 11, 1917. However, he has been a Galveston Island resident for most all of his life. He was employed as a mechanic's supervisor in the tool room of Todd Shipyards where he later retired after 49 years of hard work and dedication. As a WWII Veteran, Mr. Savanich served proudly in the United States Marine Corps during the time period from March 1945, to March, 1946.Mr. Savanich is predeceased in death by his parents, Frank and Agnes Savanich; one of his granddaughters, Deborah Renee Huling-Gross; his only sister and several brothers. He leaves behind many fond memories with his loving and devoted wife of 33 years, Dolores V. "Dee" Savanich of Galveston, Texas and his children, Robert Lee Savanich and wife, Sandy of San Juan Capistrano, California, Patricia Brown and husband, Charlie of Palm Springs, California, Catherine Huling and husband, Robert of Belflower, California, Susie Glendenning of Texas City, Texas and Thomas Watts, also of Texas City, Texas. Also sharing in his loss is Mr. Savanich's granddaughter, Summer Ann Cadajas and husband, Arnold of Texas City, Texas, his great-grandaughter, Makayla Deann Cadajas of Texas City, Texas, nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and many friends, most especially, his devoted friend, Pete Sanchez. He later went to work for Falstaff Brewery, and upon his retirement, he furthered his employment with The University of Texas Medical Branch. Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2003, at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church with Pastor William L. Randall Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at Mainland Memorial Cemetery in Hitchcock under the direction of Mainland Funeral Home of La Marque. He was born November 18, 1934, in Carthage, Texas to Theadis and Magnolia Allison Smith. He was a graduate of Central High School in Galveston. J. Dean was a faithful and devoted employee of the Coca Cola Bottling Company for thirty-five years. He was a devoted and active member of Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church where his church affiliations included the Silver Star Ministry, S.W.A.T. Ministry, a Support Warrior, Missionary Society, member of the Transportation Ministry and head of the Parking Ministry. Survivors include his mother, Magnolia (Renil) Jones; his loving and devoted wife of twenty-six years, Ester J. Smith; his daughters, Evangeline (Patrick) Mullins, Patricia Smith, Jeannetta Smith and Michelle Smith; his step-children, Vincent (Loretta) Burnett, Gwen Faye (Albert, Jr.) Urps, O. C. (Rose) Sowell Jr., Elaine (Clyde) Booth, Kenneth Ray Sowell, Timothy Wayne (Yvonne) Parker and Michael Parker; sisters, Edie M. Mrs. Soders attended the Taylor, Texas public schools and was a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. She was married to the late James Oliver Soders for over 50 years. Before moving to Los Angeles, California, she taught in several Independent School Districts in Central and East Texas. She was employed with the United States Postal Service for over 40 years in the Los Angeles, California area. She was a member of the National Alliance of Postal & Federal Employees and was an active member of many social & civic organizations. Elizabeth was born on September 19, 1915, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Elizabeth Fitzgerald Sporar, 88, passed away Monday, November 24, 2003, at her home in Galveston, Texas. Elizabeth was born on September 19, 1915, in Manchester, New Hampshire. She was a Galveston resident for the majority of her life, having arrived here from New Hampshire in May, 1927. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Galveston as Valedictorian in the Class of 1932. She graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1936 with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. Elizabeth taught in the Galveston Public Schools for several years before beginning a career in Chemistry at Monsanto Chemical Company in Texas City, Texas in 1943. She was one of the survivors of the Texas City explosion, which occurred in 1947, walking away from this tragedy relatively unscathed. She received several promotions during her employment and was Head of the Patent Department at Monsanto when she retired in 1977. She was active in many chemical organizations and held offices in several, one of which was the American Chemical Society. She was also active in a number of Catholic organizations serving in offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. For many years, Elizabeth worked effortlessly for the Ursuline Alumnae, holding several offices, primarily that of President. Elizabeth was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. She belonged to many church organizations at St. Patrick's and most recently was Vice President of the Altar Society after many years of serving as President. In 1995, Elizabeth was awarded the Papel Honor of the Cross for the Church and the Pope for outstanding contributions to the Church which was presented to her by Bishop Joseph Fiorenza . STEVENSON, JOHN W. - John W. Stevenson, 87, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 26, 2003. After working for American Optical Co. in Houston for over 40 years, he retired in 1978 to Bayou Vista. He sold eyeglass cases part-time over the next 15 years, was president of the MUD board in Bayou Vista from 1985 -1995 and for a number of years has enjoyed playing golf several days a week with his three golfing buddies at Galveston Municipal Golf Course. He was a member of Faith Community Church at Bayou Vista. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Grace in October, 1997. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Vaughan and husband, Floyd and Shara Mae Stewart and husband, Paul. L. A. Times - April 26, 2005SILVER, ESTHER Born in Galveston, Texas December 26, 1919, passed away on April 24, 2005 surrounded by her loving and caring family. Esther was the loving wife of Mort Silver for sixty-four years, mother to Bette Rose Garren and Marvin B. Silver and second mother to Ralph, Bette's husband and Beverly, Marvin's wife. She was also the cherished grandmother and great grandmother of Steven, Mark, David, Michelle, Lori, Karen, Shelby, Alaina, Jacob and Adam.
A blazing redhead, training to be a nurse in Houston, Texas, Esther was swept away by her sweetheart and future husband, Mort, in 1940. Soon after, they married, moved to California and raised their family. After retirement, Mort and Esther moved to the Ocean Hill Country Club, in Oceanside, where they happily resided for 16 years before moving back to the Los Angeles area.
Esther was a specialist at cooking comfort food and serving it with love to her family and friend's, her matzo ball soup will forever be remembered. But Esther's claim to fame were her home baked pies which garnered her the nickname "Pie Mama" by her grandson David. Esther and Mort Loved to travel, spending many wonderful years touring the four corners of the world. She had an amazing spirit and love for life and even while on dialysis, found the strength to enjoy one last trip to the Hawaiian Islands in October, 2004.
Esther will be missed by her family and friends, and those she touched aong the way, including her beloved large family in Texas
